种子、碎片、命题和救援堆。在「有了一首可以争论的歌」之前的一切。
歌大多是在「起意」这一步丢的，而且几乎从来不是因为想法不好，而是因为这个碎片没有被写成一个以后还能动工的形式——一段没有词的语音备忘、一个写在收据上的标题、一个没人标出名字的和弦手型。这个阶段的内容，都是关于怎么让一个碎片活过这一周。
这一阶段不看质量。一个到周四还能哼出来的三个音，比一段你不记得怎么写的完整主歌更值钱。写得烂但写全，好过写得好但只写一半。
