Bridge

The only section whose job is to change the terms — and the four questions that decide whether to keep it.

The bridge is the only section whose job is to change the terms. It is not a third verse with a different chord, and it is not a place to put the lines that did not fit. If the song already says everything it has to say, the correct number of bridges is zero.

The four questions the entries here keep asking: what does the song know at the bridge that it did not know at the top, what has to be true for the last chorus to land differently, what are you taking away, and what are you adding back. Answer all four and the section writes itself. Answer two and you have a verse with the wrong chords.
