A chorus is not the loud part. It is the part where the song stops explaining and starts repeating. Everything here follows from that: what gets repeated, how many syllables the repeat costs, and what the last line does the second time through.

The hook placement entries all reach the same conclusion from different directions — the hook belongs where the listener can predict it and still want it. That means the first chorus usually needs to arrive earlier than feels comfortable, and the last line is usually the only line worth changing in the final pass.
